LoudCloud Finds A Home: Last week the HP software group bought OpsWare (Née LoudCloud) for a cool $1.6B bringing to a conclusion an interesting saga. We first ran into LoudCloud shortly after selling the old IRG to Jupiter in 2000 after which John and I were invited to a "CEO Summit" Jupiter was holding in Sonoma, with Marc Andreessen as one of the speakers. LoudCloud was his big post Netscape venture. The pitch at the time was basically "we've got a lot of very bright people and we're doing amazing and exciting things but you're probably too stupid to understand the details." Of course in the late dot com period that kind of arrogance just raised anticipation and valuation so it worked as a positioning message. I couldn't resist taking the bait (especially because they were local) and went over to the HQ and admitted I was stupid but asked if they would try. At the next level down in the technical organization there were some smart and interesting guys like Tim Howes and In Sik Rhee and when you probed a little bit it turned out that LoudCloud was building interesting data models of what happens in a datacenter as applications are provisioned and evolved, all in support of building a revolutionary SP that would do production IT better than ever before because of that automation. LoudCloud went public back in those wonder times when revenue and profit were "optional" but fell on harder times when the bubble burst and ended up selling the operational stuff to EDS and becoming a software vendor (OpsWare) with a few years of operation assured by the EDS deal. OpsWare continued to broaden and improve their software bits, and then as availability, compliance and datacenter consolidation all heated up nicely they discovered themselves in a meaningful and growing enterprise market. Given that HP Software is focusing a lot of their effort building systems for IT management and operation, what OpsWare does complements nicely the legacy OpenView business and last year's big bang Mercury acquisition.
Virtual Appliances -- We've completed our newest report, Virtualization -- Advice to Infrastructure Vendors. This is our second report on the Virtual Appliance arena. Things are rapidly evolving in this space -- appliance vendors may want to watch this market closely. Interested? jkatsaros@irg-intl.com
Physical Security -- new horizons? -- Last December, at the Cisco Analyst Conference, Cisco's security group pointed out that the Physical Security market (cameras, video storage, door alarms, badge readers, emergency radios and more) represented a $6B growth opportunity in 2007. In many ways, this market opportunity resembles the transition that voice telephony has been going through for the past five years as the telephony world converges onto VoIP enabled platforms. The physical security market seems poised to make a similar transition. It's interesting enough that we've completed a new report on the subject -- interested? jkatsaros@irg-intl.com
Cisco Looks Inside: On a recent visit to Cisco, Guido Jouret, the CTO of the Emerging Technology gave a fascinating insight into their internal venturing effort. As a rule when big companies try and pretend they are entrepreneurs the results are sad, but Cisco seems to understand the issues and has answers for the basic questions. The overarching motivation for the effort is to produce the overall 15%/year revenue growth rate that the market wants to sustain Cisco's market cap. Given the ongoing cost/performance improvements in basic switching and routing, you have to run real hard in those markets just to stay in the same place. Even if you add in the existing new technologies like security and storage you don't have to go many years out before the revenue growth forecast falls below 15%. Cisco thinks they need to create 20 new businesses over the next three years to get the 16 successes they want for the $6.5B/year incremental revenue they'll need in 2012 (with a big company like Cisco numbers get large quickly). Cisco thinks they can have a 75% success rate in these ventures (carefully chosen and well funded) because (a) they won't run out of cash (Cisco has gobs), (b) they don't have to develop new customers beyond those that Cisco already sells to (just new markets), and (c) they don't have to worry about selling or manufacturing because Cisco does all of that in common already. Guido says that Cisco understands you have to look for good ideas broadly (not just from marketers and planners) so they have a reasonably elaborate internal Wiki system to generate a wealth of new ideas from across a broad Cisco population. Guido and his team vets these to find one good idea a day. The idea of the day gets handed to an evaluation team not unlike what a venture firm would have to evaluate investment proposals. Out of that process they hope to start an internal business each quarter (ahead of that rate now) and fund it to get the product released to the market in 18 months (not "G job" funding). As noted in the beginning, historically internal venturing has been problematic just because big companies don't understand what they don't understand, but maybe Cisco does.
Why Race Cars Have Brakes: In a recent presentation on Enterprise Risk Management, Cisco's Chris Kite began with a slide that noted "They don't put brakes on race cars to make them go slower; they put brakes on race cars so they can go faster!" Like me you may never have considered that point but it's clearly true. Chris' point was ultimately about Enterprise Risk Management (as a VP of Finance at Cisco, ERM is one of her responsibilities) not race cars, but her point was that she views Risk Management as a means of letting a business take more risk, not less risk, noting that you only made real money doing things that others viewed as risky. This aligns nicely with an intuition that we've been getting about security. The problem with pure security (stop bad things from happening) is that it doesn't contribute directly to the success of a business (neither raises revenues nor lowers costs). But if you think about security in the risk management category -- let a business take more risk but manage the risk -- then all of a sudden the value potentially shows up on the business success side of the equation. If you sell pure security then you sell into a cost center and the price of your product is an impediment to your customer's success. You'll hear more from us on this topic if you ask.
Postini Rings the Bell -- In a blockbuster deal announced in early July, Google announced its plans to acquire Postini for $625M in cash. Postini has always has been an innovator in the email managed services market, despite its two near death business experiences. In its conference call, Google cited Postini's 35K customer base and its scalable architecture as the reasons behind the acquisition. But Google says it already has 100K business customers (1K small businesses signing up for its hosted solutions each day) including 100's of universities. It takes a lot of channel relationships to maintain market share in the email managed services marketplace, something new for Google. Is this a case where Google actually wants to break into this market (in which case there's a lot that may change with its "go to market" strategy) or is the Postini acquisition a way to gain significant differentiation as it brings new hosted business services to market? Or, better yet, an ad-supported anti-spam service -- boy, if that ain't an Internet Oxymoron ...

How the Spammers Can Win the War: We must be spending too much time with devious people but we had our own devious thought with respect to the spam wars. First of all remember that at most 100 spammers generate the vast majority of the spam we are plagued by and receive the majority of the revenue from spam (it's always important to remember that people spam because they can make money doing so, not just to make us miserable). The second benefactors of spam of course are the spam mitigation companies who get paid to block as much as possible (but clearly not enough to actually drive the spammers out of business). What if the spammers were to take an Intel like approach and decide to tighten the belt for a while to drive their "competition" (the mitigaters) out of business? Suppose these key spammers took a year long holiday (perhaps to a Caspian Sea resort) and during that time the volume and annoyance of spam dwindled largely out of view. How long would it take before customers demanded price reductions because spam wasn't so much of a problem anymore? How long would it take for many of the vendors to go out of business as sales suddenly dropped? And then at some point the power spammers return from holidays and crank it back up with a weakened enemy. Pretty devious huh!
First Blood? -- On rumors of Motorola CEO Ed Zander's eminent departure, shares in the handset maker shot up 3%, not a good sign. Zander's two and a half years after joining Motorola have been a disappointment as its share price is about at the same level or slightly below. Not surprisingly, the focus on Zander has occurred within days of the iPhone introduction which left Motorola's Razor looking like a proverbial hula hoop. As they say, where's the "there there" with regard to Motorola's future? Like it or not Motorola is a consumer products company which, of all things, needs a hit product. Might Zander end up being the first victim of Steve Jobs' entry into this market? That's the price you pay for leaving all of those buttons on your handset.
WAAS Reaches 1000 Customers -- In July Cisco announced that it has passed the 1000th customer mark for its WAAS (Wide Area Application Services) product line launched in September, 2006. Passing the 1000th mark in a little more than nine months is a reminder of the breadth and depth of Cisco's reach and what it is capable of doing when it wants to grow its market share quickly. Arch rival Riverbed was quick to point out that it has already passed the 2,500 customer mark. Despite Cisco's growth, Riverbed's financial results from last quarter were impressive -- $54M quarterly revenue -- nearly a 200% growth from the same quarter last year.
Organizing the Internet Users: We visited an interesting start-up in SF -- QuantCast -- on one of our recent trips to the big city. We knew a little about QC because we're on the house list of their new PR specialist because of actions in previous lives, and they looked interesting because of the backgrounds of the principals and advisors (including some top Stanford statisticians). Grossly over simplified, while Google is going about organizing everything on the Internet, QC wants to organize all the users. Ultimately they think they can make some money by building a better ad delivery network based on their analysis. In the shorter term they are encouraging publishers to add their instrumentation to Web pages (one of them little nil pixel thingees) and then QC is processing the resulting torrent of data to build and refine models of who is visiting what and why. For now what they learn is open available on their Web site and its pretty spooky interesting. Oh and when we showed up at QC it turned out that some of our favorite infrastructure geeks were already working there. Small world we live in.
Cisco's 2nd Life -- Recently Cisco's Marie Hattar pointed us to the work that she has been involved with for putting Cisco on Second Life. While it's still in an early phase, it's nevertheless really interesting to see what creative marketing people can do. At Cisco's Second Life pavilions there's the standard marketing material along with things like "Connected Home" area and the "Cisco Sandbox." If you don't mind the rough edges of being a neophyte Second Life user -- which also means that you keep running into walls, things like Cisco's partner and Networker's pavilions are interesting to visit and might eventually take off. There's this old joke about Frys -- the most valuable part about shopping at Frys is the other customers that you run into in the aisles actually know a lot more about what you're shopping for than you do. It may be that something like Second Life becomes the aisles and provides a helpful meeting place for Cisco's partners and customers to meet each other and exchange ideas. It's worth taking a look at.
Funding News -- Forty infrastructure investments raised over $454M in July.
